Girls 10U Lacrosse
The 10U Girls Program introduces young athletes to the sport of lacrosse with a strong emphasis on building fundamental skills such as cradling, scooping, passing, catching, and shooting. We also cover basic offensive and defensive principles to help players understand the game's flow. The aim is to foster a positive experience that ignites a lifelong love for lacrosse.
Eligibility
Middleton Youth Lacrosse follows USA Lacrosse guidelines to ensure safe, fair, and sportsmanlike play, creating teams balanced by age, size, and skill. For 10U, players must be 10 years old or younger as of August 31 preceding the season and in second grade or older, generally comprising second, third, and fourth graders.
Residency requirements also apply; details are available on our Eligibility page.
Season
Practices begin the week after the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District's spring break. Games start in early April with the Badger Spring Invite in the Wisconsin Dells, followed by regular Saturday matches from mid-April through late May. The season ends with the Norski Invitational tournament in DeForest the first weekend of June.
Practices
Practices run 2-3 times weekly at Taylor Fields, with all 10U teams practicing together. No mandatory attendance is required, but regular participation is key to skill growth and strongly encouraged.
Player Expectations
Players should arrive at games and practices fully dressed, ready to participate, and showing respect for teammates and coaches through positive attitude, effort, and sportsmanship Players will have opportunities to try goaltending and are encouraged to explore this role.
At this age, player may occasionally request to sit out or take a break; coaches will encourage involvement without forcing participation. If a player's disengagement distracts others, coaches will discuss solutions privately with parents afterward.
Playing Time
In the 10U program, all players receive equal playing time across regular games and practices to ensure balanced development opportunities. However, during the end-of-season Norski Invitational tournament, while total playing time across the event is expected to be roughly equal, it may vary within individual games based on situational needs.
Game Format
Games are played in a 7-versus-7 format to encourage involvement and skill-building. Goalies are included, but offsides rules are not enforced. Teams must complete at least two passes before attempting a shot on goal to promote teamwork. One official oversees the game. No jewelry, including earrings, is permitted for safety reasons.
Parent Support
Running a vibrant 10U program requires significant parent involvement beyond the head coach, including an assistant coach and a bench coach per team. For home games, we need volunteers for scorekeeping and timekeeping, plus a team manager to handle communications and logistics—optionally including a post-game snack schedule. In essence, parent contributions are vital to maintaining a fun, organized environment.
Equipment
Middleton Lacrosse does not typically provide equipment, so players need their own:
- crosse (stick);
- goggles; and
- mouthguard.
Players may also wear gloves and protective headgear. All items must be worn properly during practices and games.
Middleton Lacrosse will provide goalie equipment.
Cleats are recommended but optional; lacrosse-specific or molded alternatives (e.g., from soccer or softball) are fine.
NOTE: Badgerland Lacrosse prohibits the wearing of all jewelry, including earrings.
Scholarships
Scholarships and financial aid for equipment are available for eligible families.
Girls 10U Registration
Registration opens in early January and closes on March 1.
Initial registration is open to the first 15 registrants. After 15 registrants, subsequent registrations will join a waitlist.
It is the goal of Middleton Youth Lacrosse to roster every child that wants to play. So, additional teams may be established if the numbers permit and we have adequate coaching support to allow for an additional team or teams.
